What is a Tuition-Free Public Charter School in NC?
In North Carolina, a charter public school is a tuition-free, publicly funded school that operates independently from the local school board, offering a unique educational environment with greater flexibility in exchange for increased accountability. These schools are authorized by the state and must adhere to specific academic and financial standards.
Key Features of NC Public Schools
-
Publicly Funded:
Charter schools receive state and local tax dollars, making them tuition-free for students.
-
Independent Operation:
They are not governed by local school boards and
have more autonomy in areas like curriculum,
staffing, and scheduling.
-
Funding:
Both receive public funding, but charter schools may have more freedom in how they allocate those funds.
